Helmond's farewell to a much-loved teacher

Morrisdansgroep Helmond have published a heartfelt tribute to their instructor and "inspiring friend" Ęgle Hoekstra, who died in November, 1999.

Ęgle had refused to allow his cancer to prevent him attending the Thaxted Ring Meeting earlier in the year, when Helmond were asked to perform the Offertory Dance. He also continued to turn up for practices with the Netherlands side between spells in hospital.

An obituary published on the team's web site tells how Ęgle's illness spread to his central nervous system: "Recovery was impossible, and where everybody asks himself, 'Why me?', Ęgle, the unselfish statistician, said, 'Why not me?'"

Ęgle was also the founder of the Eindhoven team More Motley Morris, and a regular visitor to Sidmouth Festival. He died at the age of 47.
