A place in the set for departed friends

Marlboro Morris Men made a symbolic gesture in honour of absent friends when they danced out exactly a week after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

They shared a stand with Juggler Meadow Morris, who had hosted a gathering for the team two days after dancers Steve Adams and Chris Carstanjen were lost in the tragedy.

Margaret Bruchac reported on the occasion - at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Amherst on 18 September - for the Morris Dance Discussion List.

She wrote: "One dance was done with a 'hole' in the set, for the missing dancers.

"Afterwards, Marlboro went off to gather, and Juggler and friends went off to sing.

"We sang the songs we could remember that spoke of loss of dear friends.

"We toasted the lads, and we toasted those we love."
